Dinesh Palipana is one of those people whose CV sounds like several lives running at once: emergency doctor at Gold Coast University Hospital, senior lecturer at Griffith University, admitted lawyer, spinal cord injury researcher, disability advocate, board director and 2021 Queensland Australian of the Year.
In this episode of Queensland Business Stories, Dinesh joins Chris Tipper to talk about resilience, disability inclusion, medical innovation, leadership, purpose and what it means to send the elevator back down.
Pressure Can Cut The Diamond
Dinesh openly says he is happier, stronger and more capable after a life-changing spinal cord injury than he was before it. That is not a throwaway line. It came from long days staring at the ceiling, alone with his thoughts, deciding what kind of person he wanted to become on the other side.
One of the ideas that stayed with him came from The Diamond Cutter: pressure can either leave a rock as it is, or help shape it into something that catches the light.
The test was not whether life got harder. The test was what he chose to make from the pressure.
Rethinking Disability
Dinesh has jumped from planes, flown aircraft, bungee jumped, written a book and works in one of the busiest emergency departments in the southern hemisphere. He has done more since his injury than he did before it.
That leads him to a direct question: what is disability, really? His point is not that bodies do not change. It is that many of the limits people experience are reinforced by systems, expectations and a lack of opportunity.
The Business Case For Inclusion
The conversation does not frame disability inclusion as charity. Dinesh makes the commercial case. Businesses benefit from different perspectives, stronger cultures, lower absenteeism, more innovation and teams that challenge each other to think more clearly.
He points to examples where neurodiverse teams outperform in specific kinds of work. That shifts the conversation from pity or quotas to genuine competitive advantage.
BioSpine And Queensland Innovation
Dinesh also talks about the BioSpine project at Griffith University, which combines electrical stimulation, brain-computer interfaces, virtual reality and drug therapy to help people with spinal cord injury walk and function again.
For Dinesh, the work cannot stay trapped in a lab. He wants breakthroughs commercialised here, so Queensland and Australia capture the economic and human benefit of the innovation they help create.
Technology As A Tool For A Fuller Life
Technology has been part of Dinesh’s life since childhood, from building computers and websites out of his mother’s garage to using advanced research tools in spinal cord injury rehabilitation. His view is simple: technology should help people live fuller lives.
It should free time, create access, reduce friction and expand what people can do. The value is not the tool itself. The value is the better life it makes possible.
Leadership That Stays Grounded
Dinesh’s leadership lessons are hard-earned: stay humble, stay connected to the people doing the work, and make leadership selfless. Titles and power are not the point. How leaders treat people who can do nothing for them says more.
Sending The Elevator Back Down
Dinesh is clear that he did not get where he is alone. His mother, teachers, doctors, entrepreneurs and many others invested in him when he needed it. Sending the elevator back down means honouring that by investing in the people who come next.
That is the thread through the whole episode: pressure, purpose, contribution and the choice to build something bigger than yourself.
