Strategy That Actually Ships

Episode 21 with Kristy Hunter, founder of Hunter Marketing Co.

Many businesses know marketing matters but start in the wrong place. They choose an activity, launch an ad, write an email or commission a campaign before deciding what the business needs the work to achieve.

The Strategy Was Not The Finish Line

Kristy Hunter has worked across agencies, start-ups and ASX-listed organisations. When she started her own business, she assumed a sound strategy would give the client what they needed. Then she watched strategies fall flat because nobody stayed to make sure the work happened.

That lesson changed the model. Hunter Marketing Co. now combines strategy with implementation oversight, whether the work is delivered by an internal coordinator, freelancers, agencies or a blended team.

Three Different Levels Of Support

A solo operator may need a focused Marketing Plan in a Day: clear goals, an ideal customer, useful messages and a manageable set of activities. A growing SME may need a deeper strategy and implementation support. A larger organisation may need fractional CMO leadership without adding a full-time executive salary.

The common thread is ownership. Someone needs to connect the business objective to the work and check that the work remains on track.

Start With Goals And One Customer

Kristy begins with business goals and personal goals, then makes them specific enough to guide the next six to twelve months. From there she narrows the ideal customer and usually focuses attention on one or two channels capable of making the biggest difference.

You cannot know if you are doing a good job if you have nothing to measure it against.

That discipline is especially useful for small teams. A realistic ninety-day plan is more valuable than a sprawling strategy nobody has the capacity to execute.

AI Needs A Brand Framework

Kristy uses AI and recommends it to clients, but only inside a defined framework. Tone of voice, key messages, brand foundations and competitor context come first. Tools such as Claude can then assist with specific jobs such as blogs, email and social content.

Without that work, the output becomes generic. Kristy has seen businesses replace marketing support with unstructured AI use and damage the distinctiveness and reputation they had built.

Authenticity Beats Polish

Customers increasingly want human connection. A useful video filmed while someone walks down the street can outperform highly polished content if it feels real, specific and true to the brand.

AI can support production. It cannot manufacture the lived experience, curiosity and trust that make a business worth listening to.

Look At The Numbers

The most common mistake Kristy sees is not a missing platform or tactic. It is doing activity and failing to examine the result. She sets KPIs and tracks performance over three, six and twelve months so the team can identify plateaus, gaps and opportunities to improve.

Reporting is not decoration. If a business cannot connect spend to leads, conversion and progress toward its goals, it cannot know whether the marketing is working.

Collaboration Over Competition

Kristy is competitive by nature but sees business differently. Strategy specialists, agencies, internal teams and freelancers can each contribute where they are strongest. Protecting territory matters less than building the right outcome for the client.
