Keeping Finance Neat
Episode 17 with Alex Watson, director and principal broker of Funded Finance.
Alex Watson runs Funded Finance from Aspley, the North Brisbane suburb he grew up in, raised a family in, and now writes loans across. With a background in real estate and banking, he brings both sides of the table to mortgage and commercial finance conversations.
In this episode of Queensland Business Stories, Alex joins Chris Tipper to talk about building one of Australia’s fastest-growing brokerages, keeping finance simple, using facts instead of feelings, and turning creative client work into scalable process.
From Bankland To Building The Business
Alex’s path was not a straight line. He came out of a failed commercial real estate attempt, spent a decade in banking, and eventually realised he could serve clients better by building his own finance practice.
The move into self-employment was not romantic. Alex is open about the pressure, the fear, borrowing from family and wondering whether the business would work. That honesty matters, because his advice to other professionals is not always “just go out on your own”. Sometimes the better answer is to stay employed unless the strategy and appetite are real.
Self-employment is not automatically the better path. It has to be worth the pressure.
Good Service Is Only The Entry Level
Alex is blunt about the mortgage broking industry. A good rate, good communication and doing things on time are not the differentiator. They are the entry level.
For Funded Finance, the real work is in strategy, communication and repeatable execution. Alex enjoys the creative side of solving client finance problems, but the business only scales when that creativity becomes process.
The Two Pillars Of Finance
Alex keeps finance deliberately neat. His starting point is two pillars: borrowing capacity, and how much cash or equity a client can actually access.
That sounds simple, but it changes the conversation. First home buyers, investors and self-employed business owners can make better decisions when they know their real position instead of relying on guesses, online calculators or emotion.
Facts Beat Feelings
One of Alex’s clearest rules is to deal in facts, not feelings. Money is emotional, and Alex is honest that he has had to learn this personally as well as professionally.
He has seen clients underestimate what they can do because a tool or assumption gave them the wrong number. Real numbers create better choices. Sometimes they reveal opportunities people thought were out of reach.
Slow And Steady Wealth
Alex’s view on wealth building is grounded. He points to the compounding lesson from The Psychology of Money: the decisions made in your twenties, thirties and forties can become the foundation for much later outcomes.
Buying the first home, creating stability, understanding cash flow and surrounding yourself with the right professionals may not feel dramatic in the moment. Over time, those decisions compound.
Finance But Neat
The episode also covers Finance but Neat, Alex’s podcast and content platform. It is part finance education, part personality, and part attempt to cut through noisy money advice with practical clarity.
Alex uses AI to make the work more productive, but not to replace the human connection. His view is that AI should be grease on the wheels. The trust still comes from real stories, real people and honest communication.
Local Still Matters
Funded Finance is local to North Brisbane, but not small in ambition. Alex wants a core team that helps brokers and clients around the country execute lending at a high level.
Even so, he believes local community still matters commercially. People still want to deal with someone who understands where they live, what they are trying to build, and what the next step actually means.
